Swivel Connectors

Complex multifunctional connection for lighting systems

phg has developed a new generation of swivel connectors for BERCHTOLD medical technology, specialist for lighting systems in operating theatres.
This new development became necessary due to the increasing number of functions in the actual light, such as transmission of video images.
The new lights are mounted on the ceiling of the operating theatre and can be swivelled in many directions via articulated arms. The transmission of signal data, such as video, switch and probe signals and much more, as well as the high-current supply of the actual lamps takes place by means of several swivel connectors within this articulated arm system. The greatest importance was attached to interference-free data transmission upon simultaneous movement of the rotatable arm.

The need to guarantee a secure flow of data and electricity during movement of the light without a direct cable connection in the joint was far from an ordinary task - even for phg's extremely experienced team with their expert knowledge in the development and serial production of customised cable and connector solutions.

The result is a swivel connector with a resistance of up to 10 A with 3 power contacts and 4 signalling contacts. The complete function is stored in a compact, easy-to-install unit and complies with the most stringent requirements.
